January 22nd!
It was a seemingly ordinary spring day in Hanoi, but for the Faculty of Information Technology, it was a day of special memories – the 25th anniversary of its formation and development.
Twenty-five years ago, according to Decision No. 527/QD-BGD&ĐT-TCCB dated January 22, 2001, of the Minister of Education and Training , the Faculty of Information Technology was officially established on the basis of the Department of Informatics and the Department of Mathematics . This was an important milestone, opening a new chapter for training and research in information technology within Hanoi University of Civil Engineering.
But the Faculty's origins don't just begin in 2001. That flow quietly started in 1970 , when the Department of Computational Methods and Design Automation was established – the predecessor of the Department of Informatics. This was one of the first departments in the field of Information Technology in the Vietnamese higher education system , laying the foundation for introducing early computational thinking, automation, and data science into teaching and research. Throughout challenging historical years, the department has made active and effective contributions to the cause of national defense and development , quietly but persistently, reflecting the very spirit of science and education.
From its humble beginnings, marked by limited resources and a small faculty, to its present day – a modern, multidisciplinary, and integrated Faculty of Information Technology – it has been a long journey of intellect, perseverance, and belief. Twenty-five years is not a very long time in the history of a university, but it is enough to witness generations of dedicated teachers, the growth of countless students, and the nurturing and development of aspirations over time.
Over more than two decades of development, the Faculty has continuously expanded its scale, diversified its programs, and improved the quality of its training and research. Today, the Faculty of Information Technology has 7 specialized departments , covering 6 majors/specializations , with 66 faculty members, including 3 Associate Professors, 22 PhDs, and 7 doctoral candidates studying and researching both domestically and internationally. This team is well-trained and possesses in-depth expertise in cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data, information security, IoT, and IT applications in construction – a crucial foundation ensuring the quality of training, research, and technology transfer within the Faculty in the process of international integration.
If history is memory, then mission is a promise to the future.
The Faculty of Information Technology carries the mission of training high-quality human resources in the field of IT; developing knowledge, conducting applied research and transferring digital technology; accompanying society in the process of digital transformation and building a sustainable future . This mission is consistent and in harmony with the spirit of Hanoi University of Civil Engineering: "Co-creation for the sustainable development of society and the country" .
Looking ahead, the Faculty aims to become a strong training and research unit in digital technology , with a reputable position in the region, playing a pioneering role in innovation, digital transformation, and technology application in the fields of engineering, construction, and smart cities. Strategic goals – completing AUN-QA accreditation, expanding training programs, increasing international publications, developing a team of doctoral graduates, expanding domestic and international cooperation, and building a digital learning environment – are not just indicators, but milestones for a long, serious, and ambitious journey .
Twenty-five years – a milestone, a period, a springboard for breakthroughs.
Twenty-five years is not just a milestone, but a significant historical turning point , marking the comprehensive maturation of the Faculty of Information Technology. At this point, the Faculty has moved beyond its initial phase , firmly established itself in the foundational stage , and is entering a period of in-depth development , where the quality of education, research capabilities, academic prestige, and contributions to society become core values.
This is a time to reflect, not to stand still, but to clearly identify our position , strengthen our identity, and affirm our future direction. In the context of unprecedented rapid development of digital technology, artificial intelligence, big data, information security, smart cities, and national digital transformation, which have become the living landscape of education and society, the Faculty of Information Technology is facing a tremendous opportunity for growth while simultaneously shouldering a great responsibility .
With a solid foundation of established traditions, an increasingly standardized and internationalized faculty, a multidisciplinary training program closely linked to practical applications, and a wide network of collaborations with universities, research institutes, and businesses, the next 25 years promise to be a breakthrough period , further solidifying the Faculty's role in training high-quality human resources, conducting applied research, and leading transformation. Numbers exist both in schools and in society.
Therefore, twenty-five years is not a stopping point , but a foundation . From that foundation, the Faculty of Information Technology can confidently move forward, more steadily, more profoundly, and more powerfully – for knowledge, for people, and for the sustainable development of the country in the digital age.
Happy 25th anniversary to the Faculty of Information Technology!
I wish Khoa to always maintain his pioneering spirit, rigorous academic rigor, and passionate heart – to continue opening new horizons, not only for technology, but for the future.
January 22, 2001 – January 22, 2026
A journey has come to an end.
And a new journey is beginning.
